Fort Augustus Public Slipway
Small slipway accessed via a layby just off the A82.
Updated: July 23, 2025
Description
Fort Augustus Public Slipway is located just off the A82 as you leave Fort Augustus to the North, on the North shore of the Loch, towards the South Western end of Loch Ness.
In the small bay, numerous small vessels sit on moorings, with a couple of floating pontoons just offshore.
The location is well sheltered from prevailing South Westerly winds which do not have the sea room to build much of a chop. When the wind is coming from the North East, the slipway is very exposed to the weather running down the Loch.
The slipway is owned by Fort Augustus & Gelnmoriston Community Council, which prohibits overnight parking of vehicles and trailers, and also prohibits use of the slipway by jet skis, speed boats, water skis, and any craft intended for commercial use. If you wish to use any of the offshore moorings, you can speak to the owners.
The slipway is located within a layby off the A82, which provides offroad parking and launching space for vehicles and trailers, but you can expect it to be busy when the weather is good.
Construction is ribbed concrete, but the grip will depend on the weather conditions and any growth on the slipway itself.
There are no other facilities at the slipway, but Fort Augustus is around 1 mile away, along the A82. Here you can find ample tourist facilities with accommodation, restaurants, shops and fuel.
Although the water in Loch Ness is deep, the area around Fort Augustus Public Slipway is much shallower, with a couple of small islands and shallower areas stretching a couple of hundred meters into the loch. When waves build and run South Westerly down the loch, you can expect it to be rough in this corner.
