East Head
Popular anchorage off the sandy beaches of West Wittering
Updated: July 23, 2025
Description
East Head is a popular anchorage near the mouth of Chichester Harbour, just off a sand spit at the Northern end of West Wittering beach.
The Harbour Conservancy states that the anchorage is “south of a line between East Head Spit Buoy and the Snowhill Buoy – the two unlighted starboard floating withies, to the south of these, mark the Chart Datum contour, (swimming can be dangerous because of the strong tide).”
The drying area of the anchorage sits outside the main channel marked with starboard lateral buoys, with some deeper draft vessels preferring to anchor on the South side of the channel instead.
East Head provides good protection from the prevailing South Westerly wind direction, with weather from other direction having limited fetch as it comes across the harbour.
Landing on the sand beach is possible, but overnight stays on the land are not permitted. Vessels may spend the night at anchor.
Snowhill Creek runs inshore from the anchorage towards the village of West Wittering and a small slipway.
East Head is joined to West Wittering by a sand spit, so you can walk along the shore to some facilities at the main beach. There are no facilities on the beach at the anchorage.
East Head is within Chichester Harbour Convervancy area, so harbour dues will need to be paid by vessels.
