Crombie Pier
Ministry of Defence pier suitable for use only in an emergency.
Updated: August 8, 2025
Description
Located on the North shore of the Firth of Forth, approximately 4.5 nautical miles upriver from the Forth Bridges, Crombie Pier is a substantial concrete structure serving a local Ministry of Defence facility.
The pier’s primary purpose is as a deep water explosives handling jetty for Defence Munitions Crombie, a facility that supports MOD vessels and RFA ships.
Opened in 1916, the site’s initial use was as a munitions depot for Rosyth Naval Yard located around 3 nautical miles downstream. Although Rosyth is still in operation as a dockyard, it is no longer associated with Defence Munitions Crombie.
DM Crombie now operates as a facility for loading and discharging munitions from naval vessels of the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The US Navy also operates a Cooperative Security Location at DM Crombie in support of the US Navy and allied forces operating in Northern Europe.
It sits on a site of approximately 200 acres, less than 0.5 miles South of the Fife village of Crombie.
As a MOD facility, Crombie Pier is unsuitable for private or general commercial use except in an emergency.
Shore access to the piers is restricted due to the associated military facility, and there are no public amenities nearby.
The village of Crombie is small and does not have many facilities, but within a mile of Crombie you will find the village of Cairneyhill which has local shops, a post office, pubs, a hotel, and a fuel station.
